Even here in Ireland, there are times rather than retaining heat, we wish to expel heat from our homes. That's why our standard range of Brink MVHR systems incorporate a 'Summer Bypass' function as standard.

What is Summer Bypass?

For most of the year, MVHR systems vent stale humid air from the home and replace it with clean, freshly filtered air from the atmosphere. In Ireland, and other similar climates, the temperature outside the home is usually lower than the temperature inside. So to reduce energy loss, outgoing air passes through a heat exchanger within the MVHR system. This ensures residual heat present in the outgoing air, is transferred across to fresh air being drawn into the home. For most of the year, this approach combines effective ventilation with effective energy conservation.

However, during the summer months, there are times when we wish to cool our homes, rather than heat them. That's when Brink's Summer Bypass function comes into its own. When the air temperature inside the home reaches a predetermined level, outgoing air bypasses the MVHR's heat exchanger, with residual heat being transferred to atmosphere. The result is a more comfortable, living environment, without the need to open doors or windows.

So how is Summer Bypass activated?

Across the standard Brink range, the Summer Bypass function activates automatically, when the air temperature inside the home reaches or exceeds a predetermined temperature.

Consistent with Brink's 'fit and forget' approach, the function activates and deactivates automatically, with no buttons to press or settings to change. However, where required, the activation temperature can be altered on demand, quickly and simply by using the machine's control unit.

Do all MVHR units incorporate Automatic Summer Bypass as standard?

No. It may appear surprising, but not all MVHR units do incorporate a Summer Bypass function as standard. On some machines, it's an extra-cost option; on some others, it's not even available as an option; whilst on others it must be activated and de-activated manually.

Is Summer Bypass an alternative to Air Conditioning?

No, it isn't. When activated, Summer Bypass will provide only a limited cooling effect.

However, an MVHR system uses significantly less energy than an Air Conditioning unit. And unlike an Air Conditioning unit, you can still open your doors and windows as normal, for additional cooling. Or you can leave them closed to continue enjoy clean, freshly-filtered air.
